Good Company New Bedford
A grassroots organization with youth at its center. Our mission is to empower the voices of our youth through the process of teaching, mentoring and collecting real data around the effect of rest, communication, and accountability. We use yoga, breathing and discussion as tools to meet these tenets.
Our aim is to change the status quo of what is presented and offered to youth in general as far as wellness and mindfulness. We have come to observe through our work that culture plays a large part in how one develops the benefits from practices that are under the umbrella of wellness and mindfulness (yoga, breathwork etc). We take this to its pinnacle and place youth in the role of developing classes, series, retreats and experiences so that they can then go forth and teach/lead said events, therefore establishing their own culture around it. This is a shift in giving youth credibility and agency in a field that is 99% headed by adults. It has been studied by us that this dynamic of youth led youth classes, along with our methodology, has brought adaptations and improvements the conversations and communications of youth to one another becoming more fluent, robust and sincere.
The training of our methods is based on a bio-psycho-social model that includes everything from creating safe spaces to anatomy and physiology.
Programs Include:
Youth Mentorship/Youth Yoga Teacher Training/Youth Led Yoga Classes
Our flagship program. This program overlaps the three aspects titled above as returning and new youth enter the 8 month long cohort. The goal from Juliet is always to get youth in the position of teaching or training and of course mentoring as a way to create opportunity for them in the workforce. Currently we have three schools receiving classes from our youth in this year's cohort and we are planning events for winter, spring, and summer vacations with NBPRB.
Research and Data Collection
In its first year (2024) we have the support of Dr. Robin Petering of Young People to the Front, an
organization out of Los Angeles based in researching and policy creating with a focus on homelessness. A small group of 3 youth here are working to create unbiased data on the effectiveness of true to culture, youth led practices with a focus on communication as a determinant.
Prenatal/Postnatal Yoga Teacher Training
This is the first year (2024) of this training. Three youths have returned after becoming moms to study the art of teaching yoga in our methodology to prepare a series to teach at the Parenting Teen Program through the New Bedford School system.
R.E.S.T /Art Program
This program is in its fourth year. The R.E.S.T. part stands for Restorative/Reflective & Engaging Social Therapy and it has been designed by youth and is taught by youth. The restorative piece is a traditional yoga practice of lying comfortably in different positions with a number of yoga props. We have reinterpreted this practice by adding conversation to the restorative poses. The conversation starts with a prompt. In this program the prompts are based around art that we have viewed and discussed. The intention is to make the process of critical thinking and response easier for youth. The act of speaking when lying down comfortably, although novel in yoga, is common (Dr. Freud). The lessons from this program span from, detaching from devices, internalizing art and its context, considering one’s feelings on the art/artist, listening, speaking, art education, trusting other youth to lead, and creating a safe yet charged space to name a few.
Move Back Home
We are developing a performance art piece based on Somatic Movement and Improvisational Dance. The title Move Back Home reflects both the obvious idea of leaving home and then returning as well as being able to tune into one's body so intuitively to sense its ability to operate in/towards a state of homeostasis (using just enough energy to do a task either internally or externally). Somatic movement stems from the story of oneself and our ability to share that through the expression of movement. The backbone of this project is the storytelling of local youth and elders as they share honest and simple stories about their love and time at home in New Bedford (area). While youth and elders share their story there is a movement/dance piece to accompany it. We hope to show the beautiful differences in the ways youth/elders move and speak.
