Department of Community Services

The Department of Community Services assists the City of New Bedford in developing policies
and implementing innovative programs that improve the quality of life for the City residents. The Office
of Human Services makes a particular effort to improve and streamline delivery of City services to
special populations such as minorities, migrants, youth, and the elderly, as well as those unfamiliar with
the mechanics of City departments. The City works closely with educational institutions, area agencies,
and community-based organizations to design and implement programs that may best serve these
special populations.

Programs Offered

Saturday Academy is an enrichment program for 4th/5th grade boys attending New Bedford public schools. Now in its 16th year, SA offers leadership development, academic support, and fun educational activities – ranging from chess, lacrosse, gardening, woodworking, basketball, urban planning, field trips to colleges, and community volunteer projects -- every Saturday while school is in session. (Fall & Spring, at Dennison Memorial)

Girls Design Academy (GDA) is an after-school STEM program for girls in grades 3 – 5. GDA runs for 2 hours after school, Mondays – Fridays, and offers activities aimed at reinforcing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) skills. The program is held at Lincoln School but is open to students from other schools. (Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, priority given to students from North End schools)
