Who we are
The Z's Mission
The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center entertains, educates, and inspires our community by presenting a diverse array of high-quality performing artists and providing engaging learning opportunities that contribute to the cultural, social, and economic vitality of the Southcoast.

Schooltime Performance series
The Z’s SCHOOLTIME Performance Programs annually offers two-dozen quality curriculum-based performances to nearly 30,000 schoolchildren in grades pre-K-12 and serves schools throughout southeastern Massachusetts. The Z also offers in-school residencies including mini-performances, workshops and theatre-prep visits. To add greater insight, understanding and interpretation of the content of shows, The Z offers on-line curriculum guides and pre and post-performance question and answer sessions with performing artists and their companies.
Teen Ambassador Program
The Z’s Teen Ambassador Program facilitates learning in the arts through exposure, collaboration, creativity and engagement in the arts. The program provides unique artistic opportunities as well as work readiness training for those interested in pursuing a career in the arts, or an arts related field.
Creative Classroom
The Zeiterion’s Creative Classroom offers classes in the performing arts to learners of all ages and abilities in a variety of mediums. Classes take place in the Penler Lounge which is adjacent to the theater and are led by local teachers, performers and artists. The Creative Classroom offers a safe and inviting space in which all members of the community are able to explore their curiosity and interest in the arts.
Lights Up Summer Camp
Lights Up! is The Z’s new musical theatre camp where every student shines as they learn, play, and perform a musical production in just one week! During their experience, campers sing, dance, act, rehearse, participate in workshops and explore their creativity as they work with professional actors from Chicago. No experience necessary!
Page to Stage Arts Integration Program
The Page to Stage Arts Integration Project is an initiative where students engage in a creative process connecting theatre and ELA while meeting evolving objectives in both. Classrooms are paired with expert teaching artists with whom they learn theatre fundamentals such as acting and characterization through the lens of the historical fiction, Number the Stars. Over the course of 13 class sessions, students work towards a final script writing project and original performance that promotes collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills. Students also attend a live performance of the novel at The Z. Additionally, this project provides a foundation for educators to apply arts integration in other units and subject areas. Arming them with the tools and confidence they need to regularly include the arts in their classroom amplifies the overall impact of the program.
Internship Program
The Zeiterion’s internship program provides high school and college students with a comprehensive experience working in a non-profit performing arts center. Zeiterion interns receive training in arts administration including but not limited to development, marketing, education, and patron services.
